Step-by-Step Performance Support Infographic
Frontline staff are often required to process customer orders quickly while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, and compliance with internal systems. Errors in order intake, inventory checks, or payment processing can result in customer dissatisfaction, rework, and revenue loss.
The organization needed a simple, visual job aid that staff could reference during live customer interactions to ensure each step of the order process was completed correctly and consistently.
Primary Audience
Customer service representatives
Retail or service staff responsible for order processing
Key Constraints
High-volume, fast-paced work environment
Frequent task switching
Limited time for formal training refreshers
Need for clarity at the moment of performance
The job aid needed to function as real-time performance support, not as a training manual.
I designed this infographic as the instructional designer and content strategist, responsible for:
Analyzing the end-to-end customer order workflow
Identifying common breakdown points (missed steps, miscommunication, inventory errors)
Translating procedural steps into clear, action-oriented language
Structuring information to support fast visual scanning and checklist-style use
Designing the infographic to be intuitive, accessible, and reusable across contexts
This job aid was intentionally designed using performance support and cognitive load reduction principles.
Key design decisions included:
Sequential step structure to mirror real-world order flow
Chunking of tasks into clearly labeled steps
Use of plain language and verbs to guide action
Inclusion of a “Tips for Success” section to reinforce quality and customer experience behaviors
Checklist-style layout to support accuracy and consistency
The design emphasizes doing the task correctly, not memorizing procedures.
The design process included:
Task analysis of the customer order lifecycle
Identification of critical vs. supportive actions
Information mapping to ensure logical sequencing
Iterative layout refinement to improve readability
Alignment with customer service best practices
This ensured the infographic could be used independently without additional explanation.
